Dissidia Final Fantasy NT hits the PS4 on January 30, and it’s fair to say that fans of the FF brawler are pretty damn excited for the franchise to finally come to a home console.

Since blowing gamers away with a debut on the PSP back in 2008, Dissidia has subtly grown and evolved over the years to become what it is today. Let’s take a look…


The first game in the Dissidia series was released for the humble PSP (remember that thing?) way back in 2008, in order to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy.

Dissidia immediately stood out to gamers everywhere for a number of reasons – not just because of the 20 strong roster of iconic heroes and villains from across the franchise history, but because it was attempting to do things we’d never seen in a fighting game before.

For the uninitiated, Dissidia threw two fighters into a 3D arena to duke it out in various locations from the series’ history, with a variety of explosive attacks and combos to utilise. So far so awesome.

Of course, now, RPGs and fighters couldn’t be more different as far as genres go, but Square Enix dared to try and infuse this Final Fantasy fighter with RPG elements, such as summons, levelling, gear, and various abilities.

The result was an intricate, layered fighter that delivered fan service in spades. It’s safe to say Final Fantasy turned 20 in style.


After being showered with adoration by fans and critics alike, it would have been unfair for Square Enix to leave Dissidia as a one and done kind of deal.

Thankfully, March 2011 saw the arrival of Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy, a prequel/remake of sorts for the PSP that further fleshed out the original game’s story, as well as chucking in a whopping nine new characters and seven new arenas for good measure.

Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy further expanded upon the RPG trappings of its predecessor by including an assist system, in which players could call allies to aid them in battle.

Essentially then, it was more of what we loved, with even more great characters and concepts thrown in for good measure. That’s a how you do a sequel.


An arcade version of Dissidia was unleashed in Japan in the November of 2015, ushering in all kinds of amazing new ideas, as well as boasting the most breathtaking visuals seen in Dissidia yet.

The team based fight introduced yet another new layer of strategy, while playable characters were now divided into four combat categories to denote their personal fighting styles: Vanguard, Marksman, Assassin, and Specialist).

Dissidia NT then, was the ultimate version of one of the freshest and most innovative fighting games around. The only problem? It was only available at arcades in Japan…


Of course, it would have been mighty rude for Japan to keep such a fantastic game to themselves, and so it was that a PlayStation 4 version of Dissidia Final Fantasy NT was announced back in June 2017, with the January 30 release now imminent.

This new version of Dissidia is easily the definitive, with stunning visuals, a massive roster of characters, and a wide variety of classic stages, strategies to master, summons to discover, and combos to learn.

Throw in the fact that the 3v3 combat has been augmented by the ability to play with two other actual humans through the magic of online gaming, and we’re looking at an action packed team based fighter packed with depth.
