There’s nothing worse than munching on your healthy salad in disappointment while you watch your colleague tuck into a delicious looking pizza slice.

You know their lunch option is bad for your health but it doesn’t stop you from starting to salivate and daydream about ordering a takeaway for dinner.

It’s no surprise then a study has revealed Brits suffer from food envy once a week, with the usual suspects of cheesy garlic bread, pizza and cheesecake being most likely to bring on the jealously.

The research, which was commissioned by Just Eat, found almost half of Brits have suffered from food envy, wishing they were eating what was on someone else’s plate instead.

It’s even worse in January too as sticking to your healthy New Year’s resolutions means you aren’t eating what you really want.

The survey of 2,000 adults also discovered four in 10 will order the same food as other people simply to avoid feeling jealous with a quarter totally changing their takeaway choice after seeing what a friend chose.

Graham Corfield of Just Eat, said:

When ordering a takeaway or dining with friends, there’s nothing worse than feeling like you made the wrong choice when the person next to you has something you want more.

With many trying to cut back during January, food envy is rife, particularly as we battle to make it to pay day after the long month of having little or no money.

Cheesy garlic bread was found to be the biggest evil when it came to inducing food envy closely followed by nachos, crispy duck pancakes, ribs and onion rings.

When it comes to the main course, pizza was most likely to leave people battling the green-eyed-monster followed by fish and chips, steak, a cheeseburger and then a mixed grill.

For dessert, cheesecake is the most enviable pudding with chocolate fudge cake, an ice cream sundae, sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownies also being major villains.

Writing this really has left my stomach growling with hunger!

When food envy does strike, it’s normally our loved ones who bear the brunt of our anger – one in four admit their jealously has led to arguments.

More than two thirds of those surveyed said rows normally happened between them and their partner with the disagreements often being caused because someone tried to take food from another’s plate.

One in five have stolen food from another person’s plate while they weren’t looking with almost one in ten admitting they’ve even switched meals with someone altogether.
