Seven police officers are injured and at least three are feared dead after a gunman opened fire in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

A witness told WBRZ News 2 that a man dressed in black, with his face covered, began shooting randomly with an assault rifle after walking out of a convenience store.

Speaking to CNN, the mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, Kip Holden, claimed that three police officers are feared dead.

A source also told the news organisation that the remaining officers are hospitalised in a critical condition.

He said:

There is still an active scene. They are investigating. Right now we are trying to get our arms around everything. It’s just been one thing after another.

It’s believed that the incident began around 9am local time between Baton Rouge Police HQ and the I-12 road, The Mirror reports.

A large manhunt for the suspect is now underway, with a dozen marked and unmarked police cars, alongside a SWAT team heading to that location.

Tensions remain high in the area after the killing of Alton Sterling by local police. The 37-year-old was pinned down by officers, before they shot him several times in the chest and back at point blank range.

Civil rights leaders and race campaigners joined hundreds of mourners for Sterling’s funeral yesterday.
