Here’s Why We Don’t Hear From Johnny Knoxville Anymore

Back in the year 2000, a strange and hilarious new MTV reality show hit our screens as Jackass made its unforgettable debut.

The de facto host of the show, a certain Mr Johnny Knoxville, was catapulted to stardom, gaining huge success over the course of three series and three hit movies as well as minor roles in several other films.

But what is he up to now? In recent years he’s pretty much vanished from the public eye and here, according to YouTube channel Looper, are the real reasons why.

He’s not really an actor.

It’s safe to say that Knoxville’s post Jackass acting career isn’t going to be delivering him any Oscars any time soon.

Films like The Dukes Of Hazard, Walking Tall and The Ringer were both critical and box office flops and saw Knoxville hopelessly typecast as an idiotic mischief maker – not a great recipe for acting success.

He’s carrying some pretty severe injuries.

Unsurprisingly, Knoxville sustained a fair few injuries while working on Jackass. He was knocked out cold twice while filming the first Jackass movie and allegedly ‘nearly died’ when a rocket exploded under him.

But worst of all, he broke his own penis and tore his urethra when a motorbike stunt went wrong. He still has to use a catheter twice a day.

The death of Ryan Dunn.

Knoxville took a major hit in 2011 when his co-star and close friend Ryan Dunn was killed in a car accident aged just 34.

At the time Knoxville released a statement saying:

You’ll have to excuse me, I’m just very sad because I lost my brother and my world got about 134 per cent less funny.

I don’t know what to say right now so I will close with I love you Ryan.

Shortly afterwards, Knoxville spun off from the Jackass franchise with the film Bad Grandpa – which actually proved to be a financial success and could’ve indicated a way forward outside of Jackass.

He’s been working on smaller projects.

He has continued to work on other stuff but they just haven’t got as much attention. He’s worked on a couple of independent projects – Weightless, with Julianne Nicholson to name one – which could help him get out of that pesky typecasting.

Family life.

Knoxville actually has an incredibly happy life as a family man. He actually credits impending fatherhood as kickstarting his career – it was the need for cash to support his family that inspired him to try different types of self-defence equipment on himself.

Since Jackass finished his quiet family life and happy marriage have kept the paparazzi at bay and helped keep him out of the media spotlight.

To be fair, he’s probably earned a break!
