Sometimes winning a small amount on the lottery or on a scratch card can be worse than winning nothing.
You get all excited, there’s the rush of adrenaline as if – just maybe – you’ve won the jackpot.
Perhaps you’ve played online and received a notification saying ‘we have news about your ticket’. That’s the one that gets me every time, because what follows is a frantic scramble to log into your account, which you’ve probably forgotten the password to, or your hands start sweating so profusely it’s impossible to enter the password in the first place.
Finally you’re logged in, and you’ve won… a pound or two. Or a dollar. Just enough to make you think, well, I might as well just buy another ticket. That’s how they get you!
One man in Iowa, US, however, didn’t think that. Instead, he thought he’d celebrate the momentous achievement of winning $1 on a lottery scratch card by getting the good folk who run it, to present him with a giant novelty cheque.
Sometimes, you just have to celebrate the little things in life.
So Tyler Heep, from Urbandale, popped on down to the lottery headquarters in Des Moines to request his winnings be presented to him on a giant cheque, just like all the other jackpot winners. Because sometimes you just have to be extra.
Despite probably paying more than his winnings in gas just to get to the offices, Tyler was wise and, according to NBC Los Angeles, reinvested his winnings back into ‘half a gallon of gas’.
Writing on Facebook, Tyler said:
I just went by the state lottery office with a winning scratch off ticket. I told them I’d like one of those big ceremonial checks as payment.
I figured it would be worth a shot and they all thought it was really funny. I’m surprised nobody else has done this before.
Good to see they had a sense of humour about it all! Though I wonder how much it costs the lottery to present one of these big cheques…
Speaking to NBC Los Angeles, Tyler said, as per 7 News:
They decided to treat me just like a million dollar winner. The guy came down the stairs and they took me into the back room where the camera was with the Iowa Lottery logo.
Sure enough they wrote me the one dollar cheque and had me hold it up and took the picture.
In the memo section of the giant cheque, the lottery officials wrote, ‘stinking rich’, while it was signed by Larry L. Loss – though I’m sure Larry won’t be too bothered about the loss of one dollar. Thanks.
To commemorate his big win, Tyler also said he’s getting his giant cheque framed so he can display it on his wall. And why wouldn’t you? Sometimes you need a reminder of the good things in life.
It’s quite the opposite to what a couple did when they won £115 million on the lottery recently – a giant cheque was involved, of course, but then? A nice cup of tea and a good night’s sleep. Lovely.
