Ryan Reynolds is one of the nicest and funniest guys in Hollywood at the minute.
Almost every other day we cover something hilarious he’s done on social media or said during an interview.
Nor is it uncommon for us to write about his banter-full relationship with his wife, Blake Lively, with the happy couple constantly throwing shade at one another in equal measure.
However. As with every human in the world, Ryan Reynolds is an ordinary man. Although he makes us laugh endlessly, he does have to deal with many of the same problems as the rest of us.
One of Reynolds’ troubles was with his father, James, which he opened up on in a recent interview with Mr. Porter.
Speaking about his father, Reynolds said:
My dad was a tough guy. He was good in many ways as well, but he was tough on us. This is not meant to be some sob story—everyone carries their own bag of rocks around and I am no different in that regard—but growing up in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways.
Reynolds, who grew up in a lower-middle class family in Canada, always had a tough relationship with his father, however shortly before his dad’s death in 2015 after a long battle with Parkinson’s, Ryan made up with his dad – with help from his ever-loving wife, Blake Lively.
In case you didn’t guess it yet, their first daughter James was directly named after Ryan’s father.
He explained in the same interview:
It felt right. All family relationships come with some complications. For better or worse, all roads lead to here. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad.
My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy.
In 2016, Reynolds and Lively had their second child together, another girl, who they named Inez.
Speaking about becoming a father for the second time, Reynolds said:
I love being a dad. It’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
Reynolds struggled during his childhood as his father ‘was tough’, not being easy on anybody in the family leading to him battling with anxiety.
Opening up to Variety about his struggle, Reynolds explained:
I have three older brothers. Our father was tough. He wasn’t easy on anyone. And he wasn’t easy on himself.
I think the anxiety might have started there, trying to find ways to control others by trying to control myself. At the time, I never recognised that. I was just a twitchy kid.
Even today Reynolds suffers from crippling anxiety especially struggling when his passion project Deadpool was given the green light.
I may have three older brothers, but only one Jeff. You were the first friend I ever had. If there was ever a fire and I had to choose a family member to save, obviously it’d be me. But if I had time to save one more… and I knew it was safe to re-enter the burning building, you can be damn sure I’d call the fire department. They’re experts in the field and have top quality safety gear. Not to mention experience in these matters. I love you. Happy Birthday.?
Trying to find ways to manage his fear, his wife Blake Lively continually supported him, helping Reynolds to stay calm.
I liked Ryan Reynolds in the first place but now I have a helluva lot more respect for him!
