A woman in Canada looked to have her priorities mixed up this weekend, as she was seemingly caught taking a selfie while her car sunk below the surface of an icy river.

The bizarre events unfolded on the frozen Rideau River in Ottawa, Canada on Sunday afternoon, January 16, after the driver sped across the solid surface of the river.

Footage shared online shows the yellow car zipping by, but local residents had to launch a rescue mission when the vehicle broke through the ice and began sinking into the freezing water.

The driver climbed to the roof of her car to try and avoid the river water while rescuers used a kayak and ropes to help save her, but the woman didn’t appear to be in any rush as local resident Lynda Douglas spotted her stretching out her arm in what can only be described as a ‘selfie’ pose.

Sharing the photo on Twitter, Douglas wrote: ‘She captured the moment with a selfie while people hurried and worried to help her.’

Douglas told Mediaite she snapped a photo of the woman while on the phone to 911. Another image taken by the onlooker appeared to have been taken shortly after, and showed the woman looking into the water below as her car slowly sunk further down.

Thankfully the quick response of onlookers ensured the woman was able to escape the car, after which she declined treatment at the scene. A video showed the woman being pulled to safety while onlookers made sure everyone was safe, saying: ‘Everyone was out of the car?’

Describing the rescue, per The Independent, one witness said:

So luckily one of my other neighbours, Rob Crober, had a rope that he had got, so he ran back to his place to grab one of his kayaks off his kayak rack.

It’s like everything worked out perfectly. Got her on the kayak, pulled her in. And as soon as we pulled her in, the car went under. Fully.

The Ottawa Police Service confirmed the driver had been saved ‘by local residents using a kayak and quick safe thinking’, and explained that the woman has been charged with ‘one count of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle under the Criminal Code of Canada’ following the incident.

Police added that the woman’s car was ‘still in the river and could pose as a hazard for curious onlookers venturing out on the ice’, warning: ‘Ice conditions at this time of year can be unpredictable. No Ice is Safe Ice.’
