Metallica had perfect response after fan tried to gatekeep 'Master Of Puppets'

The band defended their 'Stranger Things fans'

Kate Bush wasn’t the only music star to have a boost in her fan base thanks to a certain Netflix show.

Of course, I’m talking about Stranger Things and the iconic inclusion of a Metallica song. Watch the clip here:

Back in season four, metalhead Eddie Munson (played by Joseph Quinn) had an adorable friendship with Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo).

And in a particularly memorable – not to mention heart-breaking – scene, the rocker played a Metallica song.

Standing on top of a trailer in the Upside Down, Eddie rocked out to the 1986 hit ‘Master of Puppets’ with an epic guitar solo.

And when this scene hit Netflix, the song had a resurgence in popularity as younger fans heard the band’s hit for the first time.

And while that should be a pretty cool thing for fans, some metal-lovers attempted to ‘gatekeep’ the band, seemingly unhappy with a newer, younger generation enjoying the music.

In July 2022, Metallica posted a clip showing the band playing 'Master of Puppets' live, prompting one fan to post: "I'm sorry Metallica for all the fake Stranger Things fans love ya.”

But the band had no time for anyone who attempted to discourage new fans discovering their music, quickly responding: "If they like Puppets, chances are they'll find plenty of other songs to get into."

The band then added a new top comment to their clip, posting: "FYI – EVERYONE is welcome in the Metallica Family.

"Whether you've been a fan for 40 hours or 40 years, we all share a bond through music. All of you started at ground zero at one point in time."

Good point well made!

Thanks to its inclusion in the show, 'Master of Puppets' had a whopping 400 percent increase in streams, according to Billboard.

And the band is absolutely delighted to have been featured in the show, writing on Instagram: “The way The Duffer Brothers have incorporated music into Stranger Things has always been next level, so we were beyond psyched for them to not only include 'Master of Puppets' in the show, but to have such a pivotal scene built around it.

“We were all stoked to see the final result and when we did we were totally blown away... it’s so extremely well done, so much so, that some folks were able to guess the song just by seeing a few seconds of Joseph Quinn’s hands in the trailer!! How crazy cool is that?

“It’s an incredible honour to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show.”
