She’s one of the most influential hip hop artists of all time, paving the way for a new generation of outspoken female rappers.

And Missy Elliott is still showing younger artists how it’s done, with the apparent announcement of a newly completed album.

This marks the Virginia rapper’s first studio album for 14 years, delighting fans who’ve been following her career throughout the decades.

Missy announced the exciting news via an Instagram post of her dancing away happily to Soul II Soul’s Keep on Movin.

This celebratory post was captioned:

I just finished a long project I been working on since last year & this my mood ‘Keep On Movin’ I’m bout to show yall I’m on some next ish. [sic]

47-year-old Missy’s last album The Cookbook came out in 2005, bringing mega hits such as Lose Control and earning her a Grammy nomination.

In the years since, the Work It rapper has featured on numerous collaborations, including lending her talents to Busta Rhymes’s 2018 track Get It.

Missy’s last major release as lead singer on a track was in 2015, with WTF (Where They From) , a critically acclaimed single featuring Pharrell Williams.

It’s already been a huge year for Missy, who in January became the very first female hip hop artist to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

The Hall of Fame praised Missy for her ‘inventive songwriting and production work’, describing her as being ‘one of the most significant female artists in contemporary music history’.

A five-time Grammy Award winner, Missy has also earned huge commercial success, with US sales exceeding 30 million. Her debut album Supa Dupa Fly was released in 1997, firmly establishing her as a unique and innovative creative talent.

In the years since, she’s continued to develop her distinctive voice, providing inspiration for countless female hip hop fans. No doubt her latest project will show the same ingenious ear for detail.

Fans have reacted with great enthusiasm to the news, viewing it as an exciting new chapter in Missy’s oeuvre.
