Being rich looks great, you can basically dick about and do whatever you want. 87-year-old millionaire, Forrest Fenn, is certainly having a laugh with his stash of cash.

Forrest has had a pretty adventurous life as a fighter pilot in Vietnam, a self-taught archaeologist, and later a successful art dealer.

He has decided to inject adventure into all our lives buy burying some treasure and leaving a trail of clues.

The major clue is a map and poem posted to Instagram:

The map seems like it would be a helpful guide, but it actually covers two thirds of the length of the US. Which is quite a large place to search for a small chest of gold.

Luckily Mr Fenn says, ‘All of the information you need to find the treasure is in the poem’, which reads as follows:

As I have gone alone in there
And with my treasures bold,
I can keep my secret where,
And hint of riches new and old.

Begin it where warm waters halt
And take it in the canyon down,
Not far, but too far to walk,
Put in below the home of Brown.

From there it’s no place for the meek,
The end is ever drawing nigh;
There’ll be no paddle in your creek,
Just beauty loads and water high.

If you’ve been wise and found the blaze,
Look quickly down, your quest to cease,
But tarry scant with marvel gaze,
Just take the chest and go in peace.

So why is it that I must go
And leave my trove for all to seek?
The answer I already know,
I’ve done it tired, and now I’m weak.

So hear me all and listen good,
Your effort will be worth the cold.
If you are brave and love the wood
I give you title to the gold.

I’ve read that about six times and keep getting lost. I think some local knowledge and a bit of research would help narrow it down a bit though.

After all the reward seems worth a little hard work:

I absolutely love that people are out there creating real life mysteries and treasure maps for us to solve. It makes the world a little more magical and inspires me to be a bit more adventurous myself.

Speaking to NPR Forrest revealed that:

No one knows where that treasure chest is but me. If I die tomorrow, the knowledge of that location goes in the coffin with me.

He also told NPR that the box of treasure weighs 40lb (18kg) when loaded. If the box itself weighs 10lb (4.5kg) that’s £450,720 ($631,366) worth of gold.

Although apparently the case is also packed with ‘rubies, sapphires, emeralds and diamonds’, which would increase its value significantly.

My good friend Steve Collins and I.

There are other clues as well alongside the poem:

– It is hidden in the Rocky Mountains.
– At an elevation above 5,000 feet.
– It’s not in a mine, a graveyard or near a structure.

Maybe that is enough for you to crack the code and go treasure hunting? Although, beware, at least two people have already lost their lives looking for this lost gold.
