Amber Heard Explains Why People Think She's A Liar In Johnny Depp Trial

Amber Heard has attempted to explain why she has been branded a ‘liar’ amid her legal woes with former husband Johnny Depp.

Depp is suing his ex-wife over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed she wrote, in which he claims she defamed him by suggesting he was abusive towards her, despite the actress never mentioning him by name.

Speaking this week, Heard suggested she’d been portrayed as being dishonest because Depp is a ‘bigger star’ and has ‘more publicity reach’.

On Monday (16 May) Heard was asked by Depp’s lawyer about her 2018 claim on Dutch TV show RTL Late Night that she had donated half of her $7m (£5.6m) divorce settlement to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) charity.

The charity said later that it was yet to receive any such donation, with Heard admitting to the court she ‘hadn’t been able to fulfil those obligations yet’.

Depp’s lawyer asked Heard whether her donation promise was simply a bid to score ‘good press’ and ‘praise’, to which Heard replied: “That wasn’t my interest’, according to The Independent

Heard went on: “My interest is in my name – in clearing my name. At the time, I was being called a ‘liar’ and my motives were being questioned. I did see it as important to clear that up.”

She added: “I wanted to make a statement to make sure there was not any doubt. That I couldn’t be labelled these things just because Johnny was the bigger star and had more publicity reach.”

It comes after Heard’s agent revealed the actor was almost recast for Aquaman 2 because of backlash over her and Depp’s legal battles.

Warner Bros

In a pre-recorded deposition, Jessica Kovacevic spoke about Heard’s career before and after her highly-publicised break-up from Depp, saying Warner Bros wanted to replace her star as Mera in the blockbuster sequel.

According to Kovacevic, the studio cited a ‘lack of chemistry’ between Heard and co-star Jason Momoa as the reason it was considering her recasting.

However, Kovacevic said she believes Warner Bros actually wanted to replace Heard because of the negative press Heard was getting.

While the studio never listed Heard’s personal life as an issue, Kovacevic claimed bosses didn’t ‘want to hire someone who had bad press’, saying: “No one wants that association.”

Of the situation, Heard said earlier this week in court: "I fought really hard to stay in the movie. They didn’t want to include me in the film."
