Amber Heard has told the court she and Johnny Depp had a 'safe word' to use in arguments they had during their marriage.

Heard returned to the stand today (16 May) to continue her testimony in the ongoing defamation trial in Fairfax, Virginia, where she is fighting accusations of defamation from Depp.

Depp has accused Heard of implying she was a victim of abuse in a 2018 op-ed, and in court today the Aquaman actor was asked to recall the first alleged instance of abuse she experienced from her then-partner.

Heard has discussed the alleged instance previously, but said today she got the date wrong and that it actually occurred in 2012, not 2013, when Depp allegedly assaulted her when she asked him to explain a 'faded' tattoo that had previously related to his relationship with Winona Ryder.

Speaking today, Heard said she was 'heartbroken' to be slapped three times across the face.

Both Heard and Depp have discussed conflict they faced during their marriage, and today Heard testified the pair used the word 'couch' as a safe word during their fights.

While being questioned by her lawyer Elaine Bredehoft, Heard said the word was considered a 'truce', saying it indicated they should 'put down the proverbial guns and say 'we're not fighting anymore''.

The word has been heard a number of times audio recordings of fights between Heard and Depp, though Depp has previously offered up a different explanation for the term.

In audio played in court during Depp's fourth day of testimony, Heard could be heard saying: "I want couch. By the way, you just threw a f**king cigarette on me.”

When Depp was asked what the exchange meant, the Pirates of the Caribbean star responded: "It’s pretty clear she’s ordering me on the couch," The Guardian reports.

Heard claimed she and Depp began recording their conversations to help them deal with communication problems, saying she was constantly having to deal with different versions of Depp and alleging one version wouldn't remember what the other said as a result of drug use.

Following a fight in 2015, Heard claimed she and Depp 'fell back in love' and were 'talking about the future', saying they were 'in a beautiful, peaceful place'. She also told the court violence became 'almost normal, especially towards the end'.

Heard filed for divorce from Depp in 2016 following their marriage in 2015.
