Boxer and I’m A Celebrity… star Amir Khan has been on the receiving end of abuse and death threats following his latest Instagram post.
The former welterweight champ posted a picture on his Instagram which showed a Christmas tree along with the caption ‘While everyone’s asleep, daddy put the Christmas tree up’.
He put the tree up for his three-year-old daughter Lamaisah and added it was ‘… going to be happy #Christmas #MerryChristmas2017’.
However, despite the nice gesture for his daughter the Bolton-born boxer was subjected to abuse and death threats from Instagram commenters. Being a devout Muslim they felt it was wrong for him to be celebrating a holiday associated with another faith.
One commenter told Khan:
I promise to god i want kill you and your family amir.
While another person wrote:
Muslims don’t celebrate Christmas.
It’s one thing to give out cards at school your respecting other faith and their celebration but putting up a tree in your own home….poor kid will be well confused
Some people in the comments section felt he was going against the teachings of Islam for putting up the tree. However, there were just as many people who came to his defence and supported his right to celebrate Christmas.
One of his supporters wrote:
Unbelievable how cynical everyone is for Daddy Amir who clearly stated that his intention in putting up the tree was to make his daughter happy.
His intentions aren’t to attend mass in any church!
Can someone applaud this gentleman for simply working hard as a provider father who has perhaps already set up the nursery and bought tons of gifts for Lamaisah and for the unborn baby.
While Christmas is traditionally a Christian holiday which celebrates the birth of Jesus, he’s also present in Islamic teachings as one of the many prophets in the Quran.
This year has been a peculiar year for the British boxer, while he hasn’t been in the ring since 2016, he’s been through the wars nonetheless. In August he was involved in a very public spat with his ex-wife Faryal Makhdoom Khan after he accused her of cheating on him with heavyweight golden boy Anthony Joshua.
The two took their grievances to Twitter to air out their dirty laundry and somehow managed to rope in the heavyweight champ in the process. To Joshua’s credit, he took it all as a joke and barely responded to Khan’s accusations, which in the end turned out to be false.
After that debacle Khan joined ITV’s I’m A Celebrity… – my guess was to help put a positive light on his image – however, his time there didn’t do him any favours with the public.
The boiling point came when the public accused him, along with the other campmates, of ganging up and bullying fellow contestant Iain Lee.
