Arsenal Face Losing Best Two Players After Contract Extension Rejection
Arsenal have had a shocking summer.
They started brightly as they signed Granit Xhaka from Borussia Moenchengladbach, but soon started to underwhelm as they only managed to add Rob Holding and Takuma Asano to their squad.
They currently face a defensive crisis too, but it could get even worse for Arsene Wenger, as his two best players stall on signing a new contract.
Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez are both in the final two years of their current deals, and that’s usually when clubs move to tie down their prized assets to longer deals.
The Gunners are no exception, and have been talking with the pair all summer, but progress hasn’t been great, and that could mean the duo are thinking about their futures, with Arsenal no nearer to challenging for the title than they were when they first arrived.
It’s long been said that Wenger’s side have been good enough to win the title for the last few years, but always fall away when the going gets tough, and last season was no exception, with Leicester City showing the kind of resilience that has been missing from any Arsenal side for the last decade.
Doubts over Arsenal’s capabilities are only natural, and with the news that they are struggling to get key players to sign new deals, it’s clearly getting into players’ minds as well.
One thing is for sure, if the Gunners are to win anything in the next few years, they’ll be better placed to do it with Sanchez and Ozil in their team, rather than losing them to the host of European clubs that will surely be interested.
At the end of the day, you can’t blame a top player for wanting to win titles and trophies, so Arsenal’s annual failure looks set to cost them big time if they can’t get signatures on paper.
Of course, this could all end up rectifying itself should officials convince the players that progress can be made, but the way Arsenal’s summer is going, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them take another huge blow.
