An MP has called for a review of the ‘lenient’ jail sentences for the couple who grievously injured and killed six-year-old Arthur Labinjo-Hughes.

Arthur was killed on June 16, 2020, after sustaining an ‘unsurvivable head injury’ at the hands of Emma Tustin, 32, in their home in Solihull. After his murder, he was found to have a total of 130 injuries.

She was handed 29 years for murder, as well as four counts of child cruelty, including assaults, intimidation and poisoning the child’s meals with salt. Arthur’s father, Thomas Hughes, was sentenced to 21 years for manslaughter.

Solihull MP Julian Knight posted a video to Twitter this morning, December 4, calling for stronger sentences for the couple, whom he brands ‘horrible monsters’.

‘Solihull still has collective heartbreak over the murder of young Arthur Labinjo-Hughes. I share the view that the sentences these monsters have been given are just not enough. I will be referring them for review by the Attorney General under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme,’ he wrote.

In the video, he says there’s a ‘real sense of palpable loss’, as well as ‘a sense of anger and questions how this was allowed to happen, how these horrible monsters were allowed to inflict this horrible torture on this young defenceless boy’.

‘But also I think anyone reflecting on those sentences thinks they were too lenient and my intention is to try to refer this to the unduly lenient sentencing scheme as soon as possible,’ he added.

While it’s unclear how it will progress should it be reviewed by the Attorney General, Justice Mark Wall QC described it as ‘one of the most distressing and disturbing’ cases he’d ever dealt with.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson described the details of Arthur’s ordeal as ‘deeply disturbing… it is early days, but I can tell you this, we will leave absolutely no stone unturned to find out exactly what went wrong in that appalling case’.
