More often than not, we tend to scrutinise everything celebrities do whether they’re acting a fool or doing some kind of good deed.
In the case of the latter, it’s hard to tell whether they’re doing something because it’s good PR or if it’s with genuine intentions. But in the case of Ashton Kutcher’s generous $4 million donation to Ellen DeGeneres’ endangered wildlife fund, face value tells me it was truly the from heart.
Kutcher, who was an unexpected guest on yesterday’s Ellen Show, surprised the beloved American TV host with the most generous donation to her wildlife fund to date.
Last February, when Ellen turned 60 years old her wife and actor Portia De Rossi (best known as Lindsay Bluthe Fünke in Arrested Development) gifted her with a wildlife foundation set up in her name, The Ellen DeGeneres Wildlife Fund.
It was set up to help protect endangered wildlife in Africa, mainly gorillas. De Rossi surprised her wife during a segment on her show and it was truly emotional.
Fast forward to three months later and Ellen was in for another emotional surprise when actor Ashton Kutcher stopped by. The impromptu interview began when Ashton asked Ellen where she was going for her vacation. She told him she was off to Africa to start building the foundation’s campus.
He then brought on stage a close business partner of his, Guy Oseary, who helps him invest in tech companies. One of the companies they’ve put their money into was Ripple, who deal in quick money transfers.
Kutcher told Ellen and her studio audience:
So, we were meeting with these folks and they were talking to us about the ethics of this company and this platform and how they actually really care about being an ethical company and giving a portion of this platform away to people that are doing good in the world.
He then went on to say:
You explained to me that if you weren’t doing this that what you would be working on is that project, right? You would be saving the gorillas. But you never ask anyone for anything ever and you said ‘At some point I’m going to need some help with this.’ And I said, ‘You’re asking me for help? You never ask anyone for help ever!’
Oseary also says Ellen contacted him about this ‘this incredible story, this gift of a lifetime’ which he had promised both he and Kutcher would help her with.
Kutcher goes on to say:
I told them [Ripple] that there’s this amazing human being, and all they ever do is think about other people they can give to. Whether it’s in New Orleans, whether it’s in Montecito, whether it’s the people that come here, the people out there, you’re always thinking about everyone else, and we wanted to show you that people are thinking about you.
Ellen was clearly overwhelmed with Kutcher’s gift of $4 million to her wildlife fund as you could see the tears well up in her eyes.
According to the fund’s website, the mountain gorilla population in Rwanda has doubled, but theirs is the only species which is increasing in the wild. Currently, there are only 880 mountain gorillas alive on Earth today.
On the website’s homepage, Ellen states:
I love animals, and I want to protect them, especially when they’re endangered. We need these incredible creatures and they need our love and compassion to help save them.
