The incident erupted at 7:15pm local time at Brussels North station, according to ABC.

Belgian police explained to the Associated Press: “One of our patrols was attacked by a man armed with a knife.

“The two police officers then called for reinforcements.

They added: “The two injured detectives and the assailant were taken to hospital."

A 'judicial officer told AP that there was suspicion this was a 'terror attack', however wouldn't elaborate further with evidence.

An investigation is underway into the motives behind the stabbing.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo has offered his condolences to the officers who were killed and injured in the incident.

"My thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased officer.
