Bomb Squad Called As Dozens Evacuated From Their Homes Over ‘Suspicious Items’ In Derby

Dozens have been evacuated from their homes in Derby while a bomb squad investigates ‘suspicious items’. 

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal units arrived on King Alfred Street in Normanton earlier today, December 5, with local residents advised to steer clear of the area while officers investigate. A 50-metre exclusion zone has been put in place, according to local reports.


One man has been arrested and remains in custody, as per Derbyshire LiveHe hasn’t been identified, nor is it clear which, if any charges he’s facing.

‘Officers attended a house in King Alfred Street, Normanton, at around 11.30am. A man has been arrested and remains in police custody. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team are on site and a number of houses are currently being evacuated in King Alfred Street, Monk Street and Wolfa Street,’ a police spokesperson said.

‘Residents are asked to stay away from the area and those evacuated will be contacted when it is safe to return to their homes.’

One witness also told the outlet, ‘I’ve not been told when I can get back into my house, but to be honest with you, I could get back in my house if I wanted to as I live at the top end.’

Another said, ‘I had breakfast about 1pm and I went downstairs to put something out in the bin and there was bomb disposal unit and a police officer outside. It was pretty nuts. It is not what you expect on a Sunday afternoon.’

There are no further updates regarding the bomb squad’s findings at the time of writing.
