Boris Johnson Will Not Be Fined Over Lockdown Parties At This Time

Boris Johnson's spokesperson has said that he has not been fined for breaching Covid regulations.

Evidence emerged last year that alleged Johnson had attended several parties/gatherings during the height of the pandemic.

The news comes after police announced they had initially recommended 20 fines be issued in relation to the gatherings.

When asked about the fine, Johnson's spokesperson told reporters: "No. We've said we will update if that were to occur but our position has not changed."

They also said the identities of any of Johnson's family or office who are being fined will not be publicised.

"The identities of people dealt with in this way would not be released or confirmed, that’s what the Met themselves have made clear", the spokesperson said, as per the Independent.

They went on to say, however: "Obviously recognising the significant public interest in the prime minister we are committed to updating should that occur in his case."

While Johnson himself has not been fined, Shadow Health Secretary Wes Streeting has said that the fines that are being issued in relation to the scandal make Johnson a 'proven liar'.

"Fines issued by the Police for parties in Downing Street that broke the lockdown rules. According to Boris Johnson these were the parties that never happened. He’s a proven liar and lied repeatedly to the House of Commons and the country," Streeting said.

A number of polls conducted in the 48 hours after the unveiling of the Sue Gray report suggested that 63 percent of respondents believed that Johnson should resign, as per iNews.

According to JL Partners, 71 percent of Conservatives believe that Johnson broke lockdown rules, while a YouGov poll found that 77 percent believe the prime minister is either solely or jointly responsible for what occurred. This is at odds with the suggestion that the 'culture' at 10 Downing Street was to blame.

The prime minister is alleged to have attended six of the 12 events being investigated, which took place between May 2020 and April 2021 last year.
