British Man Reveals Why He ‘Tried To Assassinate’ Donald Trump
A British man who allegedly tried to assassinate U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump has reportedly revealed to his father why he did it.
Michael Sandford, 20, spoke to his father last week after a prison visit in Nevada and told him that: ‘Someone had to stand up for America’.
According to his family, Michael, who has a history of mental illness, is ‘bewildered, frightened and overwhelmed’ after being held in solitary confinement.
In an interview with the Mail on Sunday, his father Paul Davey, 50, said he was shocked by Michael’s confession:
I asked him what happened and he would only say that if Trump was elected, it would change the world and that somebody had to stand up for America.
His parents said that Michael was a bright young man with mental health problems and that what he did was ‘completely out of character’.
His mother Lynne, said:
Every message I’ve had from everybody who has ever known him says what a delightful person he is, how considerate, how charming, how polite. A jail certainly isn’t the best place for him.
They spoke of the moment he was detained overnight at a psychiatric hospital last year, after being found ‘distressed’ in a car on the first day of a fortnight holiday.
A few months later he returned to the U.S. and lost contact with his family, which is when his mum alerted the authorities.
He was arrested last week at a Trump rally in Las Vegas for allegedly trying to grab a policeman’s gun to attempt an assassination on the Republican presidential candidate.
According to police documents, Sandford told arresting officers that he had he been planning the assassination for a year and expected to die during the attempt.
Last night, his mother urged the U.S. authorities to let her son return to Britain to receive psychiatric help, adding he’s ‘a very troubled, disturbed person now.’
