A British woman is fearing ‘facing the death penalty’ in Egypt after she was arrested for carrying painkillers on holiday there.

33-year-old Laura Plummer was arrested for carrying prescription tramadol pills, which are worth £23.

As she flew into a Red Sea beach resort for a two-week break with her Egyptian husband Omar, Laura was arrested and has since been held for a month in a 15ft-by 15ft-cell with 25 other women.

At the airport, shop worker Laura from Hull was reportedly held for five hours – without an interpreter – and was made to sign a 38-page statement in Arabic which she thought would mean she would be allowed to leave.

She had flown to Hurghada airport on October 9 to visit her husband, who she jets out to see four times a year.

Laura’s mother, Roberta Sinclair, told The Sun:

She had no idea she was doing anything wrong.

The painkillers were placed at the top of her suitcase, she wasn’t hiding them.

We’ve been told she’s facing either 25 years in prison or the death penalty. We’re beside ourselves worrying they’ll make an example of her.

The family have said the last text Laura sent begged her dad Neville:

I’m in trouble and I need your help

When he tried to respond, they discovered her phone was switched off – Neville has since spent £10,000 on legal bills.

Laura was bringing the tramadol pills in to give to her husband, who suffers back pain following an accident he was involved in.

Bringing in 29 strips of the drug, each one contains ten tablets.

In Britain, it’s prescription only but in some countries, it’s banned as addicts can use it as a heroin substance.

In Egypt, a pill sells for eight pence, meaning if Laura wanted to sell hers, she could have made a grand total of £23.20.

Laura’s mother Roberta, along with sisters Rachel and Jayne,  have visited her since she was arrested.

Laura has been in court twice, each time being returned to cells for 15 days at a time.

Jayne continued:

She’s still wearing the same clothes she flew out in.

When she came into court that first time, she looked dead behind the eyes and was handcuffed to a 6ft 4in policeman holding a machine gun.

She kept saying, ‘please help me, please help me’. She looked like a little child again.

Laura is due to be back in court on Thursday.

Her brother, James Plummer, spoke to Metro about how his sister was arrested for what the authorities call ‘drug trafficking’.

He said:

It’s just blown out of proportion completely.

She’s so by the book, so routine, she just likes her own home comforts, watches Emmerdale every night or things like that, going to bed at nine o’clock every night.

They say she’s unrecognisable. When they seen her, she’s like a zombie, they said.

Hopefully Laura will be released soon.
