Brits Endure Sub Zero Temperatures On Coldest Night Of Season As Arctic Blast ContinuesAlamy

Some parts of the UK have had the coldest night of the season, with temperatures plummeting well below zero.

The UK has seen a mix of weather conditions over the past few days, with snow, rain and sunshine across the country.

Storm Arwen brought cold conditions and gale-force winds to Britain. Three people were killed as a result of falling trees caused by the storm and a ‘danger to life’ alert was issued alongside a red wind warning.

Shap in Cumbria endured the lowest temperature at -8.7°C last night, the previous low being -6.4°C on November 28.

However, this wintery weather is expected to ease up throughout the day. Oli Claydon, a Met Office spokesperson, said the chilly weather would turn ‘milder’ in most parts of the country.

He explained:

The whole of the UK will turn milder. The places that will hold on to the cold air the longest will be in the south-east of the UK.

While Claydon added that the ‘low temperatures will return on Wednesday and Thursday night’ it was not expected to be ‘quite as low as we have seen before’.

Don’t get your hopes up if you aren’t a fan of the cooler weather, though, as temperatures ‘will still be below zero, but more like -4°C or -5°C’.
