CBeebies Criticised For Showing Graphic Scene
Popular kids show CBeebies has come under fire for showing a ‘graphic scene’ to its young audience.
Pre-school favourite Meet The Kittens broadcast episode nine of the series, showing a mother cat catching a dead rabbit and then presenting it to her kittens.
The cat carries the dead animal in its mouth, then drops the rabbit on the floor for the litter to sniff.
And parents weren’t happy:
On the show, the narrator says:
While almost all of their food comes from a can or a packet, cats are hunting animals and sometimes they catch things and bring them home because as mother’s they feel that they must provide food for their kittens.
You can get your cat to wear a collar with a bell. This may help them to stop catching wild animals. But it may not.
She leaves it one the stairs for her kittens to see. They’re curious, but they’re too young to understand what this is.
While parents were less than impressed by the dead rabbit, a spokesperson for the BBC said it would have been ‘disingenuous to omit this scene,’ adding: “Meet the Kittens is a programme which aims to teach our audience about all aspects of a cat’s life.”
They make a good point.
