In an embarrassing turn of events, a local council chief who was instrumental in getting rid of public toilets in his constituency was caught and fined by police for urinating in the street.

Jackie Burns, 51, was caught short just months after overseeing the closure of public loos in his area of South Lanarkshire in Scotland.

Apparently, he was waiting in a taxi rank in the early hours of Saturday morning when he suddenly felt the need to relieve himself down a nearby lane in Hamilton town centre, Scotland.

He very quickly regretted his decision.

He said:

I was approached by police, who gave me a £40 fine which I have duly paid. I am embarrassed by the incident and have apologised.

Burns, a Labour councillor and deputy leader of South Lanarkshire council, announced in May that all the council’s public conveniences were closing as part of £22 million worth of cutbacks by the Scottish Government.

The council have refused to comment on whether they thought the council chief was taking the piss, although one MSP, John Wilson, said he was “disappointed” by Burns’ behaviour.
