The Conservative Government has been making brutal cuts to public services across Britain, which is all well and good with Cameron and his chums, until it actually affects the Prime Minister and his family, it would seem.
As if to show how clueless he really is about the consequences of his political actions, it’s been revealed by the Oxford Mail and The Guardian that, in September, David Cameron wrote a letter to his local council complaining about the cuts being made to his local services.
Yes, you read that correctly – the man who is ultimately responsible for financial decisions which affect the country, appears blissfully aware of how these cuts will actually manifest themselves in practice and affect people locally.
In the letter, written to Oxfordshire county council (which covers his own constituency), Cameron says he’s “disappointed” by the council’s proposals “to make significant cuts to frontline services – from elderly day centres, to libraries, to museums. This is in addition to the unwelcome and counter-productive proposals to close children’s centres across the county”.
And, just when you thought this whole thing couldn’t get any more ridiculous, he even asks why Oxfordshire hasn’t been more careful with its money and questions why the county can’t “generate savings in a more creative manner”?
Forced to respond, the council leader, Ian Hudspeth has to explain to Cameron that the council are doing everything they can in the face of the dramatic drop in government spending, before proving every fact and figure cited by the Prime Minister as wildly inaccurate.
It goes to show how everyone is suffering under Conservative austerity cuts – plus, there’s definitely some sort of irony in the fact that a Tory county is suffering under Tory cuts.
A year ago, the National Audit Office reportedly issued a warning that the UK government had only a “limited understanding” of the savings local authorities would have to make, and this letter from a clueless PM does rather seem to confirm those concerns.
Basically, if you were ever wondering how the Prime Minister sleeps at night, you’ve just got your answer. He is completely detached from the consequences of his own actions.
