Drivers Taken To Hospital Following Horror Crash At British Grand Prix

Formula 1 drivers Alex Albon and Zhou Guanyu have been rushed to hospital following a horrific crash at Silverstone.

Formula One drivers Alex Albon and Zhou Guanyu have been taken to hospital following a horror crash on the first lap of the British Grand Prix.

The drivers were involved in a horrendous crash that happened seconds after the British Grand Prix had begun.

Multiple cars collided with one another and Zhou Guanyu's Alfa Romeo ended up upside down and skidding into the barriers.

Zhou is conscious and receiving treatment at Silverstone's medical centre after the horrific collision flipped his car upside down.

The 23-year-old's vehicle was clipped by George Russell's Mercedes, which had already come into contact with Pierre Gasly's Alpha Tauri.

One touch was all it took to flip the Alfa Romeo and send it crashing into the gap between the tyre wall and the barriers.

In the immediate aftermath of the crash Russell was seen getting out of his car and running towards where his fellow driver had ended up.

Zhou's Alfa Romeo team confirmed that their driver was conscious after being stretchered away from the impact.

Given the nature of the crash it's a miracle nobody was hurt, Zhou's life may have been saved by the Halo on his vehicle while sturdy fencing at Silverstone prevented the Alfa Romeo from smashing into the stands.

Zhou, Russell and Albon were all knocked out of the race by the crash, which triggered a red flag and sent the other racers back to the pits for an extended period of time.

Williams Racing said Albon was airlifted to hospital for 'precautionary checks' while Russell unsuccessfully appealed to be allowed back into the race.

Russell, who was first on the scene of the crash after leaving his own car by the side of the racetrack and rushing over, spoke of his his experience being involved in the crash.

He said: "Glad to hear Zhou is doing OK, a horrific incident. There was no grip on the hardest compound, I got swamped by many cars, I got touched and touched Zhou and that was it.

"I got out of the car to see if Zhou was OK... apparently as soon as you get assistance, you can’t restart.

"It’s very frustrating as the car just had a puncture and we had the pace to get back to sixth."

Racing has resumed at the British Grand Prix with the drivers taking a standing start behind the safety car to restart proceedings.

The decision was made to restart the race with the cars in the positions they had occupied on the original grid rather than the spots they held when the red flag was shown.
