Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has been knocked off the top spot as highest paid male actor, according to Forbes magazine.

Forbes published its annual list of top-paid male and female actors and it came as a shock to some as it was revealed Mark Wahlberg had taken the top spot, earning an estimated $68 million last year.

But the list has sparked outrage amidst the gender pay gap row, as it shows Wahlberg earned $42 million more than the highest paid female actor, Emma Stone.

Wahlberg’s earnings have come from movies Daddy’s Home 2 and Transformers: The Last Knight, according to the Forbes rankings, and knocked 2016’s top paid actor, Dwayne Johnson, into second place, with estimated earnings of $65 million.

This year, newcomers to the top-paid male actors list include Ryan Reynolds, Ryan Gosling, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo.

If you’re wondering how Adam Sandler has made the top five, that’s due to a $250million Netflix deal to make four original films for the streaming service.

But back to the pay gap outrage. Hollywood’s highest-paid actors continue to out-earn their female counterparts, with Emma Stone earning an estimated $26m. However, as well as Mark Wahlberg, another 13 male actors earned more than her between June 2016 and June 2017, according to Forbes.

According to Forbes, until there are an ‘equal number of high-paying roles, there will continue to be an inequality in the paychecks of Tinseltown’s very richest’.
