Ed Sheeran Saves Street Boy Out Of His Own Pocket On Comic Relief
Ed Sheeran confessed he didn’t want to be the stereotypical celebrity who travels to Africa for Comic Relief and cries on TV, but the reality of their circumstances struck him deeply.
On his trip to Liberia to raise money for Red Nose Day, the Shape Of You singer was ‘shocked and appalled’ by the conditions he saw people living in.
After meeting a young boy called JD, Ed couldn’t help but give them money out of his own pocket.
JD had dreams of becoming president to help his community, but he was sleeping rough in the middle of Liberia’s biggest slum.
Ed finished his video segment saying:
Once we’re done here we’re going to pack up the camera and these guys are gonna to be sleeping in a canoe with a lot of dangerous people about.
The singer didn’t feel right leaving the boys, and said ‘the only thing you can do is help them, which we should’.
My natural instinct is to just put them in a car and just take them and just put them in a hotel until we can get them sorted.
Can I pay to put them in a house until we get them in a school?
It doesn’t matter how much it costs can we just get him and his five mates in a house with an older person to look after them?
I don’t think we can go until that’s sorted.
When he was back in the studio, Sheeran revealed that he had heard the heartbreaking story that the boys were ‘raped’ by older boys while they slept rough, which drove him to help them more.
On last night’s Comic Relief television show, Ed performed Do I Know? and made a rare blunder, forgetting his own lyrics.
No one cared though because he’s everyone’s favourite red-head and he made everyone cry on his trip to Liberia.
Ed encouraged the public to donate to Comic Relief as these were only five boys he was helping and there are millions more.
