Edward Snowden Joined Twitter And Sent The Perfect First Tweet

Famous National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden just joined Twitter and he pretty much sent the Internet into meltdown.

And the 32-year-old American-in-exile has already got the hang of this whole social media thing – he created the account on Tuesday and has already amassed more than one million followers.

Snowden, meanwhile, is following just one account – the NSA. Well played, sir!

He sent out two tweets within the first 30 minutes but, to be honest, he pretty much nailed it with his first post on the social media site.

Former CIA employee Snowden has been in-hiding in Russia ever since he leaked classified information from the NSA in 2013. He has been charged with one count of theft of government property and two counts of unauthorised communication for confidential government information under the Espionage Act of 1917.

However, Snowden has frequently communicated with the “outside world” since then and given numerous interviews to reporters via video links. Now, his Twitter account makes him more accessible than ever – he’s even enabled direct messaging. We expect he’ll get a lot of DMs from the NSA and CIA (“Bae come over. My parents aren’t home”, etc).

In his appearance on scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson’s podcast last week (you know, the one where he said aliens exist and are trying to contact us), Snowden did joke about possibly creating a Twitter account. And fair play to him for actually following through.

He even engaged in some friendly banter with Tyson on the site, for good measure…

You can follow the man himself at @Snowden.
