A police officer has died while two were injured following a shooting on the streets of Paris.

As reported by Sky News the attacker was shot dead, but was believed to have been known to authorities.

Eye witnesses at the scene on the popular Champs-Elysees described seeing a man armed with a kalashnikov opening fire having parked a car behind a police van.

The French interior ministry are yet to confirm any motive, however the officers are thought to have been deliberately targeted.

An investigation is underway and officers on the streets of central Paris remain on high alert, and a warrant has been issued for a possible accomplice to the shooter.

The man being hunted by police is reported to have arrived in the French capital from Belgium by train.

Sky say the deceased gunman’s home has been subjected to searches, and he has allegedly been previously flagged to authorities for links to extremism.

Sky reporter Mark White said:

All the indications are that it was a terrorist attack.”

Two men were arrested a few days ago with an arsenal of weapons. And that there was a concern that an attack was being planned to coincide with the French election.

Islamic State has since said it carried out the attack, sparking a massive security alert in the country as French police hunt for a potential second gunman still on the loose.

France is just a few days away from a presidential election with tomorrow being the final day of campaigning, and national security will play a key role in the election results.
