His father was also a professional welterweight contender, having fought legendary boxing figure, Sugar Ray Leonard. Meanwhile his uncles, Jeff and Roger Mayweather were also boxers, with Roger claiming two world championship belts in his career.

His mother was reportedly a drug addict. Floyd is cited as recalling his tough urban background, saying he used to find used heroin needles in his back garden. Floyd then moved to New Jersey in the 1980s. He is quoted as saying “When people see what I have now, they have no idea of where I came from and how I didn’t have anything growing up.”

ESPN reported in April 2018 that a bodyguard for Floyd Mayweather Jr. was wounded in a shooting, as a group of three cars that included the boxer headed to a hotel in Atlanta, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

Atlanta police spokesman Donald Hannah told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

At this time, it appears that this was not a random shooting and the shooter was targeting the victim’s vehicle…No formal charges have since been made and no arrests recorded.
