Woman left humiliated at waitress’ cruel comment on restaurant bill

"What happened brought back all the anxiety."

A food blogger has spoken out after a waitress left an 'upsetting' surprise on her bill.

Billie Hyde visited Amigos Mexican Kitchen in Sheffield, UK back in May 2018 and sat down for a 'lovely' meal with 'excellent' service.

However, the then-22-year-old's experience was unfortunately ruined when she was served the bill for her meal.

One item on the menu particularly caught Billie's eye - a fillet of seabass - however, suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) she requested the dish come with 'no onions, no garlic and no milk'.

As per the Mayo Clinic, IBS is 'a common disorder that affects the stomach and intestines, also called the gastrointestinal tract'.

"Symptoms include cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation, or both," it adds.

It also notes while 'the role of food allergy or intolerance in IBS isn't fully understood,' some people experience worse IBS symptoms when 'they eat or drink certain foods or beverage,' which 'include wheat, dairy products, citrus fruits, beans, cabbage, milk and carbonated drinks'.

Indeed, a year before visiting the restaurant Billie went on a Low Fodmap diet to 'find out what causes [her] flare up's to be worse' and identified onions, garlic and milk to be triggers.

Alas, despite receiving her meal free from the three problematic ingredients and thoroughly enjoying it too, when Billie received the bill for her meal she saw a comment on the receipt about her dietary request.

The bill read: "No onion, no garlic, no milk haha."

"What happened brought back all the anxiety I'd had about going out for meals, and it's really not on," Billie said.

Billie explains the restaurant later 'apologized,' the waitress reportedly explaining to her she hadn't meant to offend her and just added the note as an inside joke to the chef because there were multiple requirements written down.

Owner of Amigos Mexican Kitchen Khalid Wani said: "I apologised personally and spoke to the member of staff, who was given a verbal warning. Nobody should make fun of people with food allergies or intolerances.

"I'm satisfied it was not the waitress's intention to make fun of the customer but regardless of her intention this should never have appeared on the bill.

"We always try to give our customers as good an experience as possible and fulfil all their needs, and I'm very sorry about what happened on this occasion."

Billie hopes sharing her story raises 'awareness of just how upsetting this sort of thing can be for people'.
