You can now play as EL-P and Killer Mike from the hip-hop group Run the Jewels in Gears of War 4, because why the fuck not?
Not only did the musical duo lend their likeness to the latest chapter in the Gears franchise, but they also provided their own voices.
While most of us would be content to chalk this down as a fun cameo, Microsoft has a hilariously contrived bit of reasoning for us.
They explained on the Xbox site:
The brotherhood that Killer Mike and El-P represent as Run the Jewels perfectly matches the soul of Gears, which at its core is about that brotherhood and never fighting alone.
Okay, awesome. But remember that time Spider-Man showed up in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2? Or the time Mario showed up NBA Street V3? Jesus Microsoft, there doesn’t have to be a reason for everything – okay?
But I digress. Check out the video below to see how El-P and Killer Mike reacted upon seeing their avatars for the first time.
In addition to the above, 18 new weapon skins, emblems, and bounties are now available in Gears of War 4 as part of the brilliantly named Run the Jewels Air Drop DLC.
Disappointingly, the rap duo can’t be used as alternate skins in the game’s campaign – they’ve instead been relegated to online multiplayer and horde modes only.
People who own the Gears 4 season pass can get their mitts on the new content now, while everybody else can get it for free November 8.
