Fans of Green Day in the UK are attempting to get American Idiot to No.1 in the charts ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit to the country in July.

Earlier this week it was announced that Trump would be rocking up to the UK on July 13 (yes, it is Friday the 13th too).

Now a hardcore Green Day fan has posted to Facebook calling all to purchase the song, American Idiot, in order to send a message to the American leader when he lands on British shores.

We have a date, he's coming Friday 13th July… so if we ALL buy enough downloads of Green Day's 'American Idiot'…

The post itself reads:

We have a date, he’s coming Friday 13th July… so if we ALL buy enough downloads of Green Day’s ‘American Idiot’ between Friday 6th-Thursday 12th it will time PERFECTLY to hit No.1 the very day he arrives on UK soil! Streaming counts too but less effective. Let’s do this!

So far the post, which was published to Facebook on Thursday has attracted 1.6k likes and over 15,000 shares, reports AltPress.

In case you wasn’t aware, it’s pretty simple why they’re trying to get American Idiot to number one.

Green Day have been avid opponents of Trump since day one. They’ve called for his impeachment and have also been known to start anti-Trump chants during their gigs.

Frontman, Billie Joe Saunders, previously posted his support for the campaign on Instagram, however he has since removed his post.

The album American Idiot itself tells the story of Jesus of Suburbia, a lower middle class American anti-hero.

The album and the plot the story tells speaks out about disillusionment and anger towards the state and politicians at the time of its release in 2004, however it is still very much relevant.

American Idiot, the title track, specifically evolves around the mass media paranoia and fear-mongering carried out by the press to do with politicians and war, something President Trump knows only too well.

Speaking about the US news coverage of the Iraq War, lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong explained:

They had all these Geraldo-like journalists in the tanks with the soldiers, getting the play-by-play.

He added that he wrote the song after listening the Lynard Skynard single, That’s How I Like It.

He explained:

It was like, ‘I’m proud to be a redneck’ and I was like, ‘oh my God, why would you be proud of something like that?’ This is exactly what I’m against.

The lyrics themselves make sense enough:

Don’t wanna be an American idiot / Don’t want a nation under the new mania / And can you hear the sound of hysteria? / The subliminal mind-f*ck America.

Welcome to a new kind of tension / All across the alien nation / Where everything isn’t meant to be okay / Television dreams of tomorrow / We’re not the ones who’re meant to follow / For that’s enough to argue.

Sure, it would send a message but I highly doubt Trump himself will be bothered one iota. Will you be supporting the campaign?
