Harvey Weinstein, the disgraced American film producer, has been charged with rape and numerous other sex crime charges.

After handing himself into a Manhattan police precinct this morning (Friday May 25), Weinstein was charged.

The NYPD has reported Weinstein has been charged with rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct for attacks involving two women.

In a police statement, the NYPD said:

The NYPD thanks these brave survivors for their courage to come forward and seek justice.

Weinstein arrived at the police precinct at 7.30am this morning. After being received by detectives outside the station, Weinstein said nothing while walking past a huge media gathering, BBC News reports.

He was then seen leaving the police station in handcuffs – being escorted by police into the back of a vehicle. He was also seen laughing to himself as he was walked to the car.

The former co-founder of Miramax is expected to appear in court later today. His bond is expected to be set at around $2 million.

Rose McGowan, one of the first women to accuse Weinstein of assault (more than 70 others have since come forward) released a statement after news of his possible arrest was announced yesterday.

In the statement McGowan said:

I, and so many of Harvey Weinstein’s survivors, had given up hope that our rapist would be held accountable by law. Twenty years ago, I swore that I would right this wrong. Today we are one step closer to justice.

We were young women who were assaulted by Weinstein and later terrorised by his vast network of complicity. I stand with my fellow survivors. May this give hope to all victims and survivors everywhere that are telling their truths.

After allegations of Weinstein’s sexual misconduct surfaced in early October 2017, more than 50 women have now come forward to accuse him of rape, sexual assault or sexual harassment. It’s alleged that he coerced women into sexual favours by using his power and influence over their career success.

Stars such as Ashley Judd, Annabella Sciorra, Angelina Jolie and Rose McGowan have come forward with allegations about Weinstein. UK actress Lysette Anthony alleged that she was attacked in the 1980s; this allegation is being investigated by The Met Police.

Weinstein admitted in the past that his behaviour may have caused pain but described many of the allegations as ‘patently false’ and has previously denied all allegations of non-consensual sex, or any acts of retaliation upon being rejected.

In the wake of the Weinstein allegations, Hollywood star Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to encourage anyone who had been sexually assaulted to tweet #MeToo to show the scope of the problem of sexual assault in society.

After more women such as Salma Hayek, Mira Sorvino and Cara Delevingne came forward, a change in society was encouraged prompting others to speak out about sexual abuse and misconduct.

As of yet – what the future holds for Weinstein remains uncertain.
