Distressing footage has emerged of the scene at a Doctors Without Borders hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan before and after it was mistakenly hit by a U.S. air strike over the weekend.

The clinic was hit several times during sustained bombing by U.S. forces in the region and reports suggest 22 people (including staff and patients) were killed, while another 37 people (including 19 staff) were wounded.

Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) have since called for a war crimes investigation into the incident and released shocking footage of the desolation caused by the strikes.

The footage shows the period at the hospital between 2011 and 2015, displaying how the facilities got bigger, cleaner, brought in better equipment, and took on increasing numbers of staff.

This part of the video contrasts dramatically with the closing shots, which shows footage shot on a camera phone of the demolished hospital following Saturday’s bombing.

President Obama has today apologised for the airstrike, but these images really bring home the horrific consequences of the U.S’ actions and why simply referring to this as “collateral damage” just isn’t good enough.
