Expert explains why you should be sleeping naked even in winter

The last thing that springs to mind in winter is sleeping naked, but here's why it might be beneficial for your health

With the coldest time of the year officially upon us and Christmas fast approaching, most of us are getting geared up for nights tucked up with a hot chocolate, fluffy socks and layers of sweaters, getting all snuggled up in the warmth of our beds.

Sounds wholesome, doesn’t it?

But this might not be the best way to go according to a sleep expert, who’s said that even on the snowiest nights, sleeping in the nude is actually beneficial for your health.

Sammy Margo, sleep expert for the bed manufacturer Dreams, explained to Metro: "While many people might think that bundling up in winter is the best way to keep warm, sleeping naked can actually help to regulate your body temperature and improve your sleep quality.

"It’s a surprising yet effective way to stay cosy and comfortable during the cold months, while giving our bodies that much needed wellbeing boost too."

So, why should we be sleeping nude in the winter?

According to The Sleep Foundation, the benefits of sleeping naked far outweigh the comfort of wrapping up.

For example, sleeping in the nude can impact the appearance and health of skin - when someone doesn't get enough sleep, their skin is more susceptible to wrinkles, drooping, swelling, and seeing the appearance of dark circles.

So if sleeping naked helps you sleep better, then it will also improve the health of your skin.

Believe it or not, it’s even said that sleeping nude can improve relationships, as sleeping skin to skin has scientifically been proven to lower stress levels and promote intimacy between couples as it triggers oxytocin, otherwise called ‘The Love Hormone.’

This can also lead to a boost in self-confidence, which is definitely a win!

And what is the best way to sleep naked?

That may read as a slightly strange question, but for hoodie addicts alike it might be difficult to know how to prepare your bedroom for a night of nude sleeping.

The Sleep Foundation gave further advice, stating that having a shower before bed and changing your sheets will make you feel fresh and comfortable throughout the night.

Also getting yourself acclimatized to your new conditions is helpful, so try sleeping in a thin t-shirt or just underwear before committing to the full nude.

Even though you’re not wearing anything, it’s still winter at the end of the day, so make sure you have a soft, thick quilt for the night just to ensure you’re warm as the temperature changes throughout the night.

Lastly, letting your partner know of your new habits can be helpful, and encouraging them to join can help you both to get used to it faster, and circles back to the ‘love hormone’ mentioned earlier.

With these helpful tips, do you think you’ll be braving the nude this holiday season?
