A runway at Heathrow airport has been closed following reported sightings of a drone.

All flights from Heathrow airport have reportedly been cancelled due to this sighting. Some of those travelling from Heathrow have been left on the runway, unable to take off.

Some of those stranded on the runway have tweeted about they have been affected by this potential sighting.

ITV Granada journalist Sarah Rogers tweeted:

Grounded at #Heathrow whilst waiting to fly home to Manchester, first officer says flights suspended whilst police investigate possible #drone activity…

Other would-be passengers have also voiced their frustration at the situation, which is giving many people a case of déjà vu.

One person tweeted footage of the runway, stating:

On a plane waiting to take off at Heathrow and we are grounded as there is a “drone” flying over the airport. Police helicopter over the runway. Hope it is just a drone.

Heathrow Airport have tweeted the following statement:

We are responding to a drone sighting at Heathrow and are working closely with the Met Police to prevent any threat to operational safety.

As a precautionary measure, we have stopped departures while we investigate. We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience this may cause.

This potential sighting comes just weeks after a drone caused chaos at Gatwick airport over the festive season.
