CM Punk’s long awaited UFC debut did not go to plan last night with the former WWE superstar tasting a convincing first-round defeat.

Facing Mickey Gall in Cleveland at UFC 203 Punk was given a baptism of fire to MMA, being forced to tap after just 2:14 into the opening round.

Gall locked in a rear-naked choke at the second attempt after Punk had initially squirme to short-lived safety.

But as reported by MMA Fighting Punk was down but not out after the fight, promising that he will be back inside the Octagon in the future.

He said following the loss:

In life, you go big, you go home, this is a hell of a challenge, but I’m not going to quit, this doesn’t mean I’m going to stop. I will be back, believe it or not. I know there’s a lot of doubters, but life’s about falling down and getting up.

He certainly has a fighting spirit, but is clearly still lacking vital MMA experience.

Meanwhile Fabricio Werdum and Travis Brown played out a fiery co-main bout that saw the Brazilian take aim at his opponent’s coach after the fight.

Werdum took the fight by unanimous decision, but Edmund Tarverdyan entered the Octagon and launched a verbal assault on the fighter.

Werdum’s response was to raise his gloves once more before aiming kicks at the man who infamously trains Ronda Rousey – it saw Brown and Werdum venture perilously close their second fight of the night.

In the night’s main event Stipe Miocic retained his heavyweight title in dominating fashion.

Miocic recorded a TKO win over Alistair Overeem in a pulsating first-round result.

Overeem believes the fight should never have got that far, accusing the referee of missing a submission tap from Miocic.

Overeem said:

I believe when I punched him and he went down. I got him in a guillotine choke, he tapped, the ref didn’t see it. In my opnion, he tapped. I think I’m the better fighter. He clearly tapped

Probably not the last we’ve heard of that one then.
