Before Michelle Obama isn’t really something I want to think about, but alas, Barack had proposed to another woman, twice!
In the early ’80s when the former US president was in his 20s and organising community events in Chicago, he met Sheila Miyoshi Jager.
A new biography by David J. Garrow, Rising Star, shines a spotlight on Barack Obama‘s relationship with Jager.
Here’s a video of Jager…
Jager, who is of Dutch and Japanese ancestry, described Obama as having ‘a deep-seated need to be loved and admired’ as well as a tendency to ‘compartmentalise his work and home life’.
In the winter of 1986, Obama asked Jager to marry him but her parents opposed because they thought she was too young, and ironically weren’t sure of Obama’s professional prospects.
Jager said to Garrow:
I remember very clearly when this transformation happened, and I remember very specifically that by 1987, about a year into our relationship, he already had his sights on becoming president.
In 1987, Barack’s dreams of becoming president came to the forefront and he believed that to fulfil his political destiny, he needed to ‘fully identify as African American’.
Jager claimed that having a non-African American spouse when running in Chicago could hinder your prospects.
She described Obama as feeling ‘trapped between the woman he loved and the destiny he knew was his’.
When Barack was ready to go to Harvard Law School, he asked Jager to marry him for a second time ‘out of a sense of desperation over our eventual parting and not in any real faith in our future’, Jager said.
In the first year of law school, Obama fell in love with Michelle Robinson and they haven’t looked back since, though Jager was still in the picture a little, which she admitted feeling bad for.
Now let’s not spend anymore time thinking about Barack Obama with anyone else!
