Inside The Chapel Built With The Bones Of Over 5,000 Corpses

TikToker shares footage of a chapel built with 5000 corpses on display.

A TikToker has shared the story of a chapel in Portugal that's literally made of bones.

Yep, that's right. The 16th century chapel has around 5,000 skulls and bones lining the walls.

The TikToker visited the chapel in question - the Capela dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) in Portugal - and filmed the entire thing, giving viewers an inside look into the bone-lined monument.

If you've watched the video you're probably wondering where all the skulls and bones came from.

Well, reportedly, the bones were from corpses that needed to be relocated due to a lack of space in the area.

The monks not wanting to condemn the bones decided to place them in the chapel. However, instead of hiding the bones from sight, they were displayed to the public.

As the content creator notes, this is because 'local monks were concerned with society's values at the time and thought it best to put the bones and skulls on display'.

If that wasn't enough to creep you out, the chapel's warning might, as the TikToker notes, 'above the chapel doors lies the chilling warning: we bones are here, waiting for yours'.

Well, it's safe to say we won't be going to Sunday service there any time soon.

While initially that sounds pretty creepy, the intention behind the chapel was to make people reflect on their lives.

A poem by Father Antonio da Ascencao that hangs on one of the chapel's pillars reflects this message. It reads, 'Where are you going in such a hurry traveler? Pause… do not advance your travel; You have no greater concern than this one: that on which you focus your sight'.

After the video went viral on TikTok, viewers responded to the chapel in some fairly different ways.

One said, 'I am sort of sad there wasn't the budget to use this location for the City of Bones in Shadowhunters series', while another added 'I think I need a trip to Portugal'.

One person liked the chapel so much they said, 'Is it bad that my first thought was “this would be a gorgeous place for a wedding?"'.

Another commented that it 'looks like most the underground tunnels in assassin's creed unity'.

However, some were more contemplative about the chapel, saying 'this seems like a place to just sit and respect'.

Others were in complete disbelief adding 'well I wanna know if this is really real like are they really real skulls'.

Yes. They really are, really real, skulls.
