Method actors often talk about how they suffer for their art but Jared Leto has revealed just how painful the toll inhabiting the twisted role of The Joker in the upcoming Suicide Squad movie took on his psyche.

And the 43-year-old was disgustingly specific in his description of how he threw himself into the iconic role, and how he infamously remained in character for the entire shoot.

As part of a cover shoot in full Joker costume for Empire magazine, Leto revealed some home truths about his process during work on the highly anticipated film.

He said:

There was definitely a period of detachment. I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn’t imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole.

While in character as The Joker, the Thirty Seconds To Mars singer also sent creepy gifts to some of his co-stars, including posting a live rat to Margot Robbie (who plays Harley Quinn) and a bullet to Will Smith (Deadshot).

Sharing a set with this guy must have been an interesting experience, to say the least!

Of course, Leto isn’t the first actor to go method to play the iconic Batman villain, with Heath Ledger’s deep descent into the character for The Dark Knight taking its toll on the Aussie’s psyche before his tragic death.

Suicide Squad comes to cinemas in August 2016 and we can’t wait to finally see Leto’s interpretation of the Clown Prince of Crime on the big screen!
