Keith Chegwin’s final tweet is a tough read following his untimely death at the age of 60.

In the final post, the legendary entertainer alludes to the illness that has since become public knowledge.

He describes how he is ‘so sorry’ for not being able to work.

He wrote:

Still not right. I will be back – But not for a bit yet. I’m so sorry.

He had tweeted three months earlier apologising for not tweeting.

His family said in a statement:

We are heartbroken to share the news that Keith Chegwin sadly passed away following a long-term battle with a progressive lung condition, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, which rapidly worsened towards the end of this year.

Keith died peacefully at home shortly after midnight on the 11th of December. His wife Maria, his daughter Rose and his son Ted were by his side.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Severn Hospice for the kindness, support and care they have shown us all over the last few weeks.

Keith was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend. We would respectfully ask to be left to mourn his passing in private.

Chegwin was renowned for his off-the-cuff broadcasting style, and claimed no one ever wrote a word for him during his career.

He was affectionately known as ‘Cheggers’, and made appearances in Ricky Gervais’ Extras and Life’s Too Short with Shaun Williamson and Les Dennis.

In 2012, Keith was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the National Reality TV Awards.

He began his professional career as an actor, with his most prestigious role that of Fleance in a 1971 production of Macbeth.

He appeared in numerous theatrical productions and radio shows, as well as acting as a radio DJ on BBC Radio 1 for Tony Blackburn’s weekend morning show.

He was set to take part in the sixth series of Dancing On Ice, but had to withdraw after breaking three ribs and fracturing his shoulder on the first day of training.

Keith is survived by his wife Maria Anne Chegwin and his two children. Our thoughts are with his friends, family and fans at this difficult time.
