Leonardo Di Caprio Turned Down The Chance To Be In Star Wars

Leonardo Di Caprio has played roles from con artist to evil slave-owner, but it turns out we missed out on the chance to see him as a young, heroic Jedi knight.

According to a new interview with the man himself, Di Caprio says he actually turned down the role of Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels.

Speaking to Shortlist, he said:

I did have a meeting with George Lucas about that, yes. I just didn’t feel ready to take that dive. At that point.

The part ultimately went to Hayden Christensen in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, leaving us with such a wooden performance that we can only dream of what Leo could have brought to such an iconic role.

In the same interview, Di Caprio also revealed that he turned down the chance to play Robin in Batman Forever instead of Chris O’Donnell and Spider-Man ahead of Tobey Maguire.

He added:

I never screen-tested [for the part of Robin]. I had a meeting with Joel Schumacher. It was just one meeting and, no, I didn’t end up doing it. As I recall I took the meeting, but didn’t want to play the role. Joel Schumacher is a very talented director but I don’t think I was ready for anything like that. [Spider-Man] was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn’t feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me.

Di Caprio didn’t rule out playing a superhero (or supervillain) in the future so, maybe, if he finally wins that elusive Oscar for his role in The Revenant, he may finally feel compelled to wear a cape and fight crime. Fingers crossed…
