Leonardo DiCaprio Is Finally Getting An Oscar, Sort Of

Even if the unthinkable should happen on February 28 and Leonardo DiCaprio doesn’t win an Oscar for his gruelling performance in The Revenant he’s still getting one – kind of.

A group of Leo fans in Siberia are hoping to correct the ‘injustice’ of him never winning the award – despite being nominated five times – by making him one themselves, RT reports.

The Oscar For Leo campaign – as it’s been named – sees the fans, from the Siberian region of Yakutia, donating silver and gold jewellery which will then be melted down and converted in to an Oscar-like statuette for the actor.

There will be slight differences between the ‘knock off statuette’ and the official one, which is golden and clutches a crusader’s sword. The mock up statue will instead be a 12-inch high silver figurine holding on to a golden ‘choron’ – a traditional three-legged Yakut goblet.

Tatyana Yegorova, the woman behind the campaign, told Russian news agency TASS that so far around 100 people have donated valuables to the cause and, while it might not be a real Oscar, it was still a valid a prize for Leo’s tremendous efforts in The Revenant.

Yakutia praises high-quality cinema and considers DiCaprio to be an actor who can inspire and delight his audiences.

We’re sure Leo appreciates their efforts but he’s got a busy month ahead of him as the favourite to take the gold this year.

However, he’ll face some stiff competition from the other nominees including last year’s winner Eddie Redmayne for The Danish Girl, Michael Fassbender for Steve Jobs, Bryan Cranston for Trumbo and Matt Damon for The Martian.
