Mason Greenwood: Manchester Utd Confirm Footballer Will Not Return To Training Or Play Matches

The football club issued a statement after the player was accused of abuse.

Manchester United has confirmed footballer Mason Greenwood has been suspended until further notice after he was accused of abuse.

The football club updated fans on Greenwood's status within the team after images and video footage were shared online by his girlfriend this morning, January 30.

Photos shared on Instagram showed bruising and bleeding, while a caption alongside the posts read: 'To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me.'

Manchester United initially released a statement to confirm it was aware of the 'images and allegations circulating on social media' and that it would 'not make any further comment until the facts have been established', however an update this afternoon confirmed Greenwood has been suspended.

Per The Mirror, the club said: 'Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.'

The team has also stated that it does not 'condone violence of any kind'.

Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United in 2019 after having graduated from the club's academy, and has since made 129 appearances and scored 25 goals.

Last February, Greenwood entered a new long-term contract with the team which is set to run until 2025, with the option to extend by a further year.

The allegations made against Greenwood have since been removed from Instagram, however Greater Manchester police has said it is aware of the images and videos and assured 'enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.' Officers are said to have attended the woman's house after the accusations came to light to take a statement.

Greenwood and his girlfriend have reportedly been romantically involved since they attended Mersey School in Greater Manchester together, having split up just briefly on one occasion in 2020.

Many social media users have expressed support for his girlfriend after the images were shared, with presenter Emma Louise Jones saying she wanted to 'applaud' the woman for speaking out.

Writing on Twitter, she added: 'I want to do this as a human being. Not as a ‘woman’ or a ‘woman in football.” Just as a human. Because, whilst I understand it needs investigating, it’s a hugely brave step, and one that might give others hope.'

The footballer has not publicly commented on the allegations at the time of writing, January 30.
