The Manchester United player has been released following allegations of abuse.

Manchester United's Mason Greenwood has been released on bail following allegations of abuse.

The 20-year-old was arrested on Sunday, January 30, on suspicion of rape and assault before being further arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill.

Greater Manchester Police announced the further arrest after being granted more time to question the footballer.

In a statement, the department said he was arrested because police 'became aware of online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence'.

It continued: 'He continues to be questioned after magistrates authorised an extension until tomorrow (Wednesday 2 February). Following enquiries so far, he has since been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill. Enquiries are ongoing.'

In an update shared today, February 2, Greater Manchester Police indicated Greenwood had been released as they said: 'A 20-year-old man arrested (on Sunday 30 January 2022) on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation.'

Greenwood made his debut for Manchester United in 2019 and has since made 129 appearances for the club. Following his arrest, United said the player will not 'train with, or play for, the club until further notice.' In a statement, the club also reiterated their 'strong condemnation of violence of any kind'.

Greenwood's arrest also resulted in his relationship with Nike being suspended, and the removal of him from versions of the FIFA 22 game.

A spokesperson from the game's manufacturer Electronic Arts explained: 'Mason Greenwood has been removed from active squads in FIFA 22 and has also been suspended from appearing in FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) packs and Ultimate Draft.'

Meanwhile, Nike stated: 'We have suspended our relationship with Mason Greenwood. We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation.'

The original allegations about Greenwood posted online have since been deleted, and police have reminded people to 'avoid any commentary or sharing of images that could compromise the victim's right to lifelong anonymity, or risk prejudicing a live investigation with active proceedings.'

Police have also confirmed the victim in the case is being offered specialist support.
