Virginia Police have confirmed that numerous people have been shot and injured after a gunman opened fire at a charity baseball practice in Alexandria.

The shooting, which took place at around 7:30am local time, in the Del Ray neighbourhood of Alexandria, injured numerous Congressional Republicans including North Virginia whip Steve Scalise, who was ‘shot in the hip’, and one of his aides.

Two Capitol police officers have also reportedly been shot, according to the Washington Post.

The suspect is believed to be in custody while victims are being transported to nearby hospitals.

Witness, Rep. Mo Brooks, said in a televised interview this morning on CNN:

I hear a loud ‘bam’ and I look around and behind third base … I see a rifle, and I see a little bit of a body and then I hear another ‘bam’ and I realize there’s still an active shooter. At the same time I hear Steve Scalise over at second base scream — he was shot.

Brooks added that he heard between 50 and 100 shots being fired.

Steve Scalise has reportedly been airlifted to hospital.

Although the suspect is in custody, police are asking members of the public to stay away from the area.
