I have just spent a very pleasant half hour scrolling through the Instagram feed of Bang Bang Tattoo – a New York tattoo parlour which counts Rihanna and Miley Cyrus among their clientele.

Owner Keith ‘Bang Bang’ McCurdy has quite rightly earned his place as one of the finest tattoo artists to ever pick up a gun, and his team of artists bring an array of imaginative styles to his hallowed studio.

Therefore, there is no cooler place on Earth to get your skin illustrated, and it’s unsurprising Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox chose Bang Bang Tattoo for his first bit of ink.

The 57-year-old actor opted for a strikingly detailed sea turtle on the inside of his right arm; a work of delicate and thoughtful beauty.

Taking to Instagram to reveal a close up of his new tattoo, Fox wrote the following mysterious caption:

First tattoo, sea turtle, long story

His fans loved everything about the tattoo, from the intricately expressive eye, to the way in which the sea turtle appears to be striking out, free and happy, through the ocean.

Many fans were desperate to know more about the ‘long story’ teased by Fox; begging the actor to share the meaning of the little turtle.

Turns out, the inspiration has turned out to be as perfect as the tattoo itself…

First tattoo, sea turtle, long story

In an interview with Inked Magazine, Bang Bang Tattoo said:

He got a sea turtle. He was telling me that there was a transformation for him with his career decisions when he was swimming in Saint John.

He spotted this turtle with a chunk missing from it’s fin and a scar on his face. And that turtle let him swim with him for about a half an hour.

He made a transcending decision right after that. So that turtle was pretty significant to him.

In 1991, Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, which causes uncontrollable tremors and muscle rigidity, and disclosed his condition to the public seven years later in 1998.

His condition reportedly did not cause him any issues during the tattooing process.

Oh, and if you didn’t already think Fox is one of the coolest people, the actor presented the studio, and his tattoo artist Mr. K, with an array of presents. A hover-board and a pair of Nike Mags sneakers.

An absolute legend, no matter what decade he finds himself in!
