Moment search team discovers body of missing millionaire in rainforest

The moment a search team in Taiwan found the lifeless body of a millionaire was caught on camera

The moment a search team in Taiwan found the lifeless body of millionaire Tsai Chin-kuo four days after he went missing in a forest was caught on camera.

The former vice president of Taiwanese electronics manufacturing company Pegatron, Chin-kuo was aged 64 and is thought to have died from a broken neck.

He was found at the bottom of a creek in the Manyueyuan National forest after setting off for a hike days earlier.

Part of the search and rescue mission was documented on Beast Runners’ (aka Petr Novotny) YouTube, which follows the escapades of a trail runner living in Taiwan.

Documenting the days-long search in the dense forest, Novotny revealed towards the end of his 16-minute video that Chin-kuo’s body was finally found in a creek.

As he panned the camera around, a dozens-strong team of people in fluorescent rescue gear and hard hats could be seen trying to remove Chin-kuo - whose body had been blurred - from the water.

Reporting on the discovery of Chin-kuo’s body, Focus Taiwan confirmed it was located at around 11:30am on 29 March at the bottom of a mountain slope near the Shuanxi hiking trail.

It’s believed Chin-kuo fell down the slope because it was raining and he was unfamiliar with the mountainous area.

Chin-kuo was first reported missing when he failed to return home from a hike and his daughter offered a NT$1 million (£30,418) reward to anyone who found her dad.

A team of 457 firefighters, rescue workers and volunteers searched the forest for 74 hours before finding Chin-kuo.

Novotny spoke to Taiwan English News about joining the search, saying at the time: “I was in this area many times and always respect it because the weather can make it ugly.”

In his YouTube clip, Novotny offered up some thoughts on how Chin-kuo may have wound up in trouble on his hike.

Novotny shared: “What went wrong? The victim did not have a habit of using an offline hiking map.

“He started the hike late in an unfamiliar area [and] bad weather was an additional stress factor. [Also] he didn’t share properly his hiking plan.”

After her dad was found, Chin-kuo’s daughter went straight to the local search command centre and thanked everyone for their efforts in finding him.
